Hello! We’re the Developmental Underpinnings of Cognition and Kid Linguistics (Duckling) Lab at Boston University’s Department of Linguistics. We study how children and adults learn, use, and make sense of the languages around them.
What we study
The Duckling Lab investigates language across the lifespan — from first words to adult comprehension.
From first words to complex sentences, we study the remarkable process of language development in children ages 3–17.
Using behavioral experiments and eye-tracking, we study how adults and children process language as it unfolds, word by word.
Using EEG, we measure neural responses to words and sentences, revealing how the brain encodes language in real time.
We’re always looking for children, families, and adults to participate in our studies. It’s fun, easy, and makes a real difference.
